Unfortunately for thousands of families, COVID-19 continues to be a prolific killer of Americans, and the death toll from the disease is still rapidly climbing even as millions receive their first and second round of vaccinations.
According to Breitbart, statistics from Johns Hopkins University indicate that within President Joe Biden’s first month in office, COVID-19 has killed roughly 99,763 Americans — a stat that most Biden-friendly mainstream media outlets likely will conveniently pass over in their reporting on the pandemic.
A rising death toll
Biden spent a vast majority of his campaign for the White House criticizing then-President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus, claiming that if he was elected to serve in the White House, his administration would all but guarantee the eventual end of the out-of-control pandemic.
When Biden was inaugurated on Jan. 20, the nationwide death toll from the virus stood at 397,611, according to Breitbart, meaning nearly 400,000 Americans had died since COVID-19 first hit the United States nearly a year prior.
As of this weekend, that number reportedly climbed to 497,374, which is baffling given that the Biden administration has incessantly preached about wearing two masks, social distancing, and rolling out a vaccination program across the country that many believed would bring a speedy end to the rising death toll.
Despite the Biden administration’s constant reminders to take precautions and the continued coronavirus-related lockdown measures instituted in a number of states and cities, the virus still seems to be as out-of-control as it was prior to Biden taking over the White House.
To Biden’s credit, according to CNBC, the newly-minted president warned America after his inauguration that the death toll would spike in his first month in office, saying at the time that “there’s nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic in the next several months.”
No end in sight?
Adding to the bleak outlook of the pandemic situation in America, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who works with the Biden administration as a chief medical adviser, revealed over the weekend that Americans shouldn’t expect to have to take those masks off anytime soon.
According to The New York Times, Fauci wants Americans to know that until the day comes where the baseline is so low that “there’s virtually no threat,” Americans should expect to continue to don masks in public. That could extend into 2022.
“If you combine getting most of the people in the country vaccinated with getting the level of virus in the community very, very low, then I believe you’re going to be able to say, for the most part, we don’t necessarily have to wear masks,” Fauci said during a recent interview.
The infectious diseases expert was asked in a separate interview about the emerging variants of COVID-19 and how they could complicate matters moving forward. Fauci hinted that if those variants — specifically the one thought to have originated in South Africa — become more prevalent in the United States, new vaccines could be needed to combat them.
Only time will tell how many more lives will be claimed by the virus during Biden’s time in office, but at this point, many of the bold promises he made during his presidential campaign don’t appear to have much of a chance at coming to fruition.
